GET READY FOR THE TRUETONES
The Truetones, featuring Dip Ferrell
With an 8-Track tape on the back cover, I didn't know what to expect. When I popped
this sucker in the CD player, I got an earful of one the best sounding CD's in my collection.
Nine out of the eleven songs on this project were pinned by Billy and Jackie Jeffords.
Two of the songs here, " Ooh girl don't stop" and "Don't blame me" have been recently
recorded and released by the Craig Woolard Band and the Part Time Party Time Band,
respectively. "No Doubt" WAS on a compilation from one20inc and now is included
with the rest of the Truetones' originals and covers. I really like "One Sure Way" and
"Everlasting Love". When I first heard it, I pictured the band on stage in a smoky
night club where one of the patrons was none other than Mike Hammer. (If you're
a fan of Mickey Spillane, you'll know who this is.) They also do admirable covers
of "People Get Ready" and "Never Gonna Be Alone Anymore" In summary,
I like this CD.

Thanks for having Craig from beachmusic45 send me your new CD, "Get Ready For the Truetones"!
Wow, what a great CD. I really love "One Sure Way" and "Ooh Girl Don't Stop". Also, you did an
outstanding on the Corenelius Brothers "Never Gonna Be Alone Anymore" which is a favorite of mine
since the 70's. Let me explain this one further.....You know when you've heard a song for over 30
years and someone remakes it, and it sounds terrible? I'm telling you that your new version is even
better than the original....and that's from a guy who loves the original!
I have to tell you that the sound and production on this CD is one of the best I have heard from
all of the Beach bands. Also, you did a great job on the packaging and liner notes. The whole
thing is put together so well! I hope all the groups in the area notice what you have done and make
these changes in their own releases.
Congratulations, I'll be spinning your songs at our dances.

I had an opportunity to spend some time at the recently completed DJ Throwdown Weekend just talking music (my favorite subject) with Billy Jeffords. Billy hails from Florence, South Carolina, has been an accomplished singer, songwriter and producer for several years AND is the driving force behind the recent release of Get Ready For The Truetones featuring Dip Ferrell. Produced and arranged by Don Dixon (wait a minute, the same Don Dixon that either produced and/or performed with the likes of R.E.M., Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kim Carnes, The Smithereens, The Spongetones, and Hootie & The Blowfish??... Yep, that’s the one…), this album also contains such renown musicians as Tim Gordon on sax, Mark Stallings on piano and organ, Joe Lindsay on guitar with Don playing various instruments as well. Nine of the eleven outstanding tracks were written by Billy and Jackie Jeffords, two of which (Ooh Girl Don’t Stop and Don’t Blame Me) were previously released by The Craig Woolard Band and The Part Time Party Time Band, respectively. Two of the tracks that fit right in on the dance floors of North Myrtle Beach are One Sure Way and No Doubt, the latter being previously released on one20inc’s Soul Street III compilation. Another one that catches my ear is Everlasting Love. It is an original, not the Carl Carlton song from the ‘70’s. Speaking of a great cover, however, the rendition of Never Gonna Be Alone Anymore featured here is really something! The same holds true for the band’s stylings on Curtis Mayfield’s timeless classic People Get Ready. To learn more about this CD and the band, check out their website at www.billyjeffords.com.
